How close is too close when living near power lines?

People are often concerned when considering the purchase of a home near high-voltage power lines. A common question is: how close is too close?

In the past, we provided general distance guidelines on our website. Over the years, however, we have learned that distance alone does not tell the full story. The only reliable way to determine EMF levels is through on-site testing with highly accurate equipment.

Proper measurement is essential. EMF levels can vary significantly depending on factors such as the type of power line, electrical load, nearby wiring, and even conditions within the home itself. We follow a proven testing protocol to ensure measurements are accurate, thorough, and meaningful.

According to widely recognized precautionary guidelines, magnetic field levels in living areas should ideally be well below 1 mG, with bedroom levels kept as low as reasonably possible. There are also recommended limits for electric fields, which should be evaluated separately according to third-party trusted guidelines.

Many people are surprised to learn that elevated EMF levels are sometimes found in homes that are nowhere near major high-voltage transmission lines. In some cases, the source may be household wiring issues, nearby distribution lines, or other electrical infrastructure.

We do EMF inspections in Toronto, the GTA, and beyond. We also have a network of inspectors across Canada and the U.S.

Would you like us to measure the EMF radiation coming from power lines near your home or pre-purchase?
